To ensure that your trip is a relaxing and joyful experience, adequate preparation is essential, involving both logistical and cultural considerations. During today’s show, we’ll share some tips to help you prepare for your upcoming travel adventure. In planning your trip, remember the following words of renowned French author Marcel Proust on the purpose of travel: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

Before booking air tickets and accommodation, make sure that you’re well-informed about the latest travel regulations and required documents for your destination. Also, research the safety conditions of your chosen destination by reading news and travel reviews, and verify that your government has issued no travel warnings for that country.

Regardless, always familiarize yourself with the luggage rules of the airline you’re flying with, as these rules can vary significantly between domestic and international flights, even within the same airline. Ensure that your daily necessities, such as prescribed medications, vitamins, probiotics, reading glasses, and the like are included. Don’t forget to pack some vegan snacks to prevent you from feeling hungry in case vegan meals are hard to find at your destination. It’s also wise to carry some extra cash along in case automatic teller machines (ATMs) or banks are scarce at your destination. If you don’t already have currency for the destination, the airport is your last opportunity for currency exchange as well as ATM withdrawals before your departure.

Now, let’s shift our focus from logistical preparations to the cultural aspects of preparing for your journey. Understanding the culture and history of your destination is an essential step in ensuring a fruitful international trip. For instance, while some cultures are inclined to demonstrate warm welcomes through hugs and cheek-kissing, others favor a more reserved approach such as handshakes, nods, or gentile smiles. Learning about the history, culture, and people of the country you’re visiting will make your journey more meaningful. You’ll find that in certain cultures, such as that of India, for example, the act of eating with your hands is the preferred way to enjoy certain vegan dishes. Don’t miss this fun if it happens to you!

Be mindful that the personal distance you’re comfortable with in your native culture might not align with the norms of the country you’re visiting. Avoid taking offense or making others uncomfortable; instead, respect the local customs. Demonstrating friendliness to local people enhances your travel experience.
