As the Humane Farming Association’s chief investigator, Gail is also an internationally renowned author and the recipient of the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal-people welfare. At HFA, she conducted countless interviews with slaughterhouse workers and inspectors, many of whom had been traumatized by the cruelty they were forced to witness or inflict. Gail carefully documented their testimonies, eventually compiling them into her book, “Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment inside the U.S. Meat Industry.”

“And after we got the front-page story in the Washington Post, the US Congress was outraged, and they decided to fund the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.” “Well, I worked with the three major networks in the United States, ABC, NBC, and CBS to expose the violations I had documented.” “HBO did a wonderful job exposing that, and millions of people saw these hogs being strangled to death.” “So that cap is being lifted, and now we’re going to be slaughtering as many hogs as we want per hour, which is really, really troubling. And for chickens, we were killing 140 birds per minute, and now we’re killing 175 birds per minute. So that’s more than 9 billion birds a year in the United States.”

Our most courageous Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) has often spoken about the immense cruelty of the meat industry, stating that the only true solution is a global shift to a vegan lifestyle. “We don’t like to think of ourselves as cruel, much less brutal, especially for something like a hamburger or a piece of bacon, but these are the facts. Animal-people are utterly, cruelly mistreated day in and day out to feed the very industry that supplies all the meat consumed by humans.”
